S1 : E1: C2: From Data to DIKW matrix

Data is oil, data is base, data is currency

It all started with “Data“. We know this word.
Data forms the base for Data Science, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.

But what is Data?
Wikipedia says:

“Data is the plural for the italian word ‘Datum’.
The word ‘data’ was first used to mean “transmissible and storable computer information” in 1946. The expression “data processing” was first used in 1954.”

Lets agree to this definition and move ahead.

What does data give?
Data gives us Information 🙂
Fair enough.. so what do we do with Information. You can use the information for your benefit, for business benefit , for society’s benefit.

However for using information , you need Knowledge. Knowledge can be obtained by educating ourselves about the subject for which we have data.

But do people having same information get the same benefit even if they know same piece of information. Mostly not. So why is it so?
Different people have different understandings and view points of the same piece of knowledge they have. They have varying Wisdom.

So in order to get benefits from the data, Wisdom plays a very important role.

Eventually we have landed up in the concept of “DIKW” matrix. Here’s a figure that summarizes the concept we discussed in this blog.
